Stress can impact a woman's period in many ways, including irregular or missed periods, heavy bleeding, and more painful periods. Dysmenorrhea is a condition characterized by severe and painful menstrual cramps.  

When the uterine lining breaks down during menstruation, prostaglandins are released, which are responsible for causing uterine contractions and can contribute to pain and inflammation.   Increased inflammation from prostaglandins leads to stronger uterine contractions, resulting in painful menstrual cramps.  

A slight metallic or musky odor is considered normal due to the iron in menstrual blood and natural vaginal bacteria. 

• Some causes of a strong odor:
  • Poor hygiene: Not changing menstrual products frequently enough 
  • Forgotten tampon: Leaving a tampon in for too long can lead to a significant odor due to bacterial overgrowth.  
  • Excess sweat: Sweat mixing with menstrual blood, especially during exercise.

 A woman's period can affect her metabolism by causing fluctuations in basal metabolic rate (BMR) throughout the menstrual cycle, with research showing that BMR tends to be lower during menstruation and slightly higher in the luteal phase (the second half of the cycle) due to hormonal changes in estrogen and progesterone levels; this can lead to feelings of increased appetite and potential for slight weight gain around the time of menstruation.  

Hormone secretion is the process by which specialized glands release hormones into the bloodstream. Hormones are chemical messengers that travel throughout the body to affect many different processes.   May help with Hot flashes experienced by women during menopause, characterized by sudden feelings of intense heat, often accompanied by sweating, flushing, and a rapid heartbeat.  

 The immune system recognizes foreign substances, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites, as well as mutated cells.
